Tribal Necklace
Make this stunning tribal style necklace, with Czech glass and vintage brass tubes.
Sometimes the process of coming up with new blog tutorials isn't straightforward. I often start with one one idea and end up with the final outcome being something else. Today's tutorial is a case in point. I originally got some long oval wooden beads that I thought would be perfect for a tribal style necklace, but when I started putting the design together, I realised it looked like a beaded seat cover! Now I'm sure they are a boon to the taxi driver and long distance van drivers, but I don't particularly want one around my neck. I still liked the actual design but had to rethink the beads. After looking all over the web for non-wooden oval beads and pretty much coming up blank, I realised I already had some vintage brass tubes I had bought ages ago but never used. And what is doubly great is that they are still available to buy, hurrah! Which is how we ended up with this beauty of a necklace.
You will need:
-2 metres of S-Lon thread or 0.3mm Supplemax monfilament thread
-8 x 32mm vintage brass tube beads
-2 x 18mm vintage brass tube beads (similar tubes still available here)
-12 x 6mm faceted Czech glass beads
-Size 5 seed beads
-Necklace ends, clasp and jump rings
-Scissors, measuring tape, chain nose pliers
How to:
1.I'm using a contasting colour of S-lon as my thread because a) you can see it better in the photos and b) I love a contrasting thread, but you can use a clear monofilament thread if you want it to be invisible. Whatever you are using, cut two lengths, each a metre long. Put the two strands together and either put a bead stopper or if like me you still can't find where you cat has hidden them, a stop bead about 25cm from the ends. This is just to stop your beads falling off the threads as you work.
2.Take the longer end of both threads through 1x 6mm bead, 1 x 18mm tube and a size 5 seed bead. I'm right-handed so find it easier to work left to right, but you can follow the the instructions going right to left as the design is symmetrical.
2. Separate the threads and put 1x seed bead and 1x 32mm tube on one and move that to the top and 1x 32mm tube and a 6mm bead on the other and move that to the bottom. For the rest of the tutorial, when I refer to the 'top' thread I mean whichever thread is at the top at that time, same for the bottom.
3.Take the bottom thread up through the tube bead on the top thread, so the threads crossover in the tube.
4.Pull the threads tight and you should be able to see the design starting to take shape.
5.Add 1x seed bead on the top and 1x 6mm followed by a 32mm tube on the bottom.
6.Bring the top thread down through the tube on the bottom thread so they crossover and pull tight.
7.Repeat step 6 again.
8.Now we need to create the middle pointed section. Add 4x 6mm beads on the bottom thread.
9.Take the same thread through the 1st of the beads again, in the same direction to create a loop.
10.Pull the bottom thread tight and make sure the beads are sitting nicley. Add 1x seed bead and 1x 32mm tube on the top thread
11.Take the bottom thread up throught the tube on the top so they crossover and pull tight.
12.Repeat step 6 twice
13.Add 1x seed bead on the top and 1x 6mm and a 32mm tube on the bottom
14.Then instead of crossing the threads over, take both threads the same way through 1x seed bead, 1x 18mm tube and 1x 6mm
15.Pull the threads tight
16.Add as many of the size 5 seed beads on each side until the necklace is as long as you would like it then thread on a necklace end, tie a knot (I use a needle to help get the knot tight) then cut off the excess thread, bend the little hook down on itself and close up the necklace end. Repeat on the other side before adding the clasp.
17.And thats it! You can add an extension chain on to give you some flexibility if you want.
